New Years Eve Dash 5K

Lessons learned from this race:
1. It’s a good idea to make sure you’ve looked at the course map in case the course is poorly marked
2. My friends are really fast
2. Having a kiddie pool full of ice and alcohol at the end of a race is never a bad thing.

It was a beautiful morning for racing in Golden Gate Park. We got there about 40 minutes before the race start and I did some easy running for a few minutes to warm up. Then I found my friends and we stood around in some muddy grass for a few minutes waiting for the start.

I went out at what felt faster than normal, but I wasn’t wearing a Garmin. The course went straight down a gradual hill for about a mile, and then we were supposed to turn around and come back up the same road…as I learned when I looked at the course map after the race. Oops.

Instead, pretty much everyone turned at an arrow (which is generally what one does when there’s an arrow) and cut across a meadow…but apparently we were supposed to keep going and then come back up the same road.

Then we looped around Stow Lake and finished where we started. Since I didn’t have a watch, I was surprised to see my time was right around 21 minutes (PR?!)…but then I heard everyone talk about how the distance was only 2.87 miles. Boo.

They did, however, hold out a ribbon so everyone could feel what it’s like to win a race…

That was pretty fun. Maybe some day I’ll get to experience it for real!

It was efinitely a little disappointing to come up short (plus I really felt like I was working hard but my pace wasn’t very fast), but the kiddie pool full of alcohol at the end quickly erased any bad feelings toward the race (and while the markings could have been better, I guess it kind of was my own fault for not knowing the actual course). So I poured myself a nice big mimosa and met up with my friends.

Cheers to a new year full of running!

I’ve been to lots of beer gardens, but never a race with a pool of alcohol.
