Ready to Run!

Until today, I didn’t really understand why people are so crazy about the Boston Marathon. When I started running marathons in 2006 it became a big deal to me (and it took me 5 tries to finally qualify), but now that I’ve gone to the expo and walked around the city a little bit, I’m starting to understand all the hype. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel about it once I’m actually running!

Between the signs up all over the city, people EVERYWHERE wearing jackets from previous years, and the expo that is FAR better than any other expo I’ve ever been to, this just feels like a bigger deal than any race I’ve done before. It’s weird though, because I don’t feel the same way as I have about other races because I know I can’t really race. I’m here JUST to soak it all up, without worrying about my time at all. In some ways it’s nice, but in other ways it feels a little weird to know I can’t possibly try my hardest. I’m just going to focus on enjoying it as much as possible!

One of the things I’m most excited about is running with my dad. I started running with him when I was 13, and this will be the second marathon we’ve run together. My parents were living in New Zealand for a year, and when I told him I qualified, he rearranged their tickets to come back to the states so he could run the Portland marathon. I anxiously tracked him and was THRILLED when he qualified too. We’ve been talking about running this race for years and I’m so happy it’s finally happening!

We spent the afternoon at the Expo, which was HUGE and had every running-related vendor you could possibly think of. I finally got some cep compression socks, which I’ve been wanting forever! I also got a SpiBelt to carry my phone and Gus during the race. The one thing I kind of couldn’t believe was how many people are already wearing their 2011 jackets! I’m definitely in the “can’t wear the shirt/jacket until you’ve actually finished” camp, but today it looked like I was in the minority.

After the expo, I met up with a bunch of bloggers, including Aron!

We live about an hour from each other and have been emailing back and forth for MONTHS, but didn’t actually meet until we both came to Boston! I also met Page in the airport and we ended up on the same fabulous red-eye flight across the country. It’s always fun/weird meeting other bloggers. Fun, because you finally get to actually talk to someone you feel like you already know, and weird because you already know so much about them even though you’ve never actually talked.

Only one more day until my first Boston! I’m ready!

Can I tell you that the story about your dad made me cry? I’m obviously super emotional right now. Pre marathon jitters and all. Hope I get to meet you in Athlete’s Village tomorrow! And I can’t wait to check out the expo today!

The story about your dad totally brought tears to my eyes. My dad was a runner, too, but he passed away when I was eight. I wish more than anything that we could run a race together!

Enjoy it! You are going to do great!
