2010: The year in Running

This was, without a doubt, the best year of running I’ve ever had. Not only did I PR at every distance, I qualified for Boston and ran my first Ultramarathon. I’m elated, but I’m not sure where to go from here, other than just to push for lower PRs in 2011.

The year didn’t start out too well, though. My first race of the year was the
LA Marathon in March. From mile 17-23, it was pretty much hell. I ended up missing my goal by a LOT with a finish time of 3:54.

Still happy at Mile 16...but not for long

After that disaster of a race, I set my sights on some shorter races as I trained for the San Francisco Marathon in July. I ran a 10K less than a minute slower than my PR, and was second in my age group.

A horribly unflattering mid-race photo

It was about 80 degrees that day, which is way hotter than I’m used to, and I immediately followed the race with an 11 mile run that was one of the worst runs of my life. I spent the rest of the day in bed with a horrible headache. Lesson learned.

On the 4th of July, Mike and I ran the Pozo 5K and I set my first 5K PR (21:19) since high school cross country!

In San Francisco, the stars aligned and my fifth marathon was by FAR the best of my life.

Nearing the finish

I ran 3:32, shattering my PR and qualifying for Boston!

In August we moved from the Central Coast to the Bay Area, and joined the Dolphin South End Runners. They put on cheap races all over the city, including the Lake Merced Half Marathon, where I ran a PR of 1:42:30 and was 3rd female overall!

Collecting my 3rd place medal

At the Oyster Point 5 Miler just a few weeks later, I won a race for the very first time. Yes it was a VERY small race (only 89 people) but it felt amazing to get that blue ribbon!

First female!

It was also a PR at the 5 mile distance.

On Thanksgiving Day, we were in Portland and ran the ORRC 4-mile Turkey Trot. It was not much fun, but it was the first race I’ve ever run at sub-freezing temperatures!

My biggest accomplishment happened this month… I became an Ultra Runner! Finishing the Rodeo Beach 50K in 6:21 was an AMAZING feeling!

Keeping hydrated

Although I didn’t keep stats on how many miles I ran this year, I think it was somewhere in the 1600 range.

So my goals for 2010…
1. Qualify for Boston (hopefully at the LA Marathon) – DONE at San Francisco Marathon
2. Run at least two full marathons – DONE – LA and San Francisco
3. Set PRs at 2 or more different distances – DONE! 5K, 5M, 10K, half, full, and 50K!
4. Run at least one trail race – DONE! Rodeo Beach 50K

I did it!

As for 2011…
1. Finish the Boston Marathon (not sure what my time goal is yet)
2. Run a sub 21 5K
3. Run a sub 45 10K
4. Run at least 2 trail races

I think I’m going to spend more time working on speed and less time working on distance, so there’s a chance Boston will be my only marathon of 2011…but we’ll see!

Happy 2011, everyone!
I’d love to read your goals too, so feel free to leave them in the comments (running-related or not!)

I love your blog — mostly for the food (Thanks for all the great recipes), but I am impressed and love to read about your running. For us non-runners, what is a PR? Congratulations on a great year and thanks for the blog.

Hi! I lurk on your blog =) One of my 2011 priorities is to comment more, and stop lurking. So, I’m starting early on my 2011 priorities.

Some others I have set for myself is to PR @ the 5k, which would be under 24:26, PR @ 10k, under 52:50, and PR @ Half under 1:52:50..

I am about to be finished with school so I set a goal to read 25 books for pleasure, no school books.

I want to work on my blog. I’m really starting to enjoy blogging, so I need to work on that.

I joined twitter =/ It makes no sense to me. I need to figure that out.

Also to pay off one of my CC.

    Happy New Year!

Jena – Thanks for sharing your goals! I definitely need to make commenting rather than lurking a priority in 2011 also!

Angela – Thank you! A PR is a personal record…the best time you’ve ever run for a certain distance.

Congratulation on an amazing running year, Cate! I am so impressed and inspired by both your speed and your determination. Can’t wait to hear how 2011 goes for you and your journey to Boston!

Sounds like an AWESOME year of running! Although I can’t believe you ran a half around Lake Merced. Otherwise known as the lake that time forgot. (worst part of the Nike Women’s marathon. For sure.)

It seems like we will both be running Boston this year! We should TOTALLY hang out!

Joanne – I didn’t know you were running Boston! I would LOVE to meet up with you! And yeah Lake Merced was a total drag during Nike Women’s (my first ever marathon), but it’s close to where I live so now I run there all the time!

Cate — I loved reading this post. Inspiring!! 🙂 I have three goals for 2011: one, become a runner (I think I told you that one already); two, run a half marathon at (don’t laugh) disneyland over my birthday weekend (labor day) (I think I can!!), and three, do the 1000 steps race in Bisbee AZ. I dunno why that sucker calls to me, but it does. So I’m going to try! 🙂 Sending love to you and Mike!
